Every list like this one is arguable, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. There is no metric that ranks architecture. What there is, in a city this size, is a shorter list of practices whose buildings other architects go and look at, and that is the list worth having.
So this is not a ranking. It is a working list, ordered by nothing, chosen on built work rather than on who has the biggest marketing budget, and it will be wrong in places. If your practice belongs on it and is not, write to us and say so. That is a serious invitation, not a formality: the list is better for being corrected.
Practices based here
Killa Design is the one most people outside the profession can name without knowing it, because Shaun Killa designed the Museum of the Future. It is worth studying for the thing the photographs do not show, which is how a torus of that geometry was rationalised into something buildable.
Godwin Austen Johnson has been here longer than almost anyone, founded in 1989 and in Dubai since 1991. Dubai Creek Golf Club, Bab Al Shams and the Al Seef masterplan on the Creek are theirs. A practice with that much time in one city accumulates something that cannot be hired in.
X Architects has built a reputation on work that takes the landscape seriously rather than sitting on it, and is now working inside the historic district at Diriyah. ANARCHITECT is smaller again and worth following for the same reason: restraint is harder than spectacle and reads better after ten years.
Etereo Design is the newest name here and arrived with the loudest single credential of the year: Wetland, the UAE Pavilion installation, took the Golden Lion at the 2026 Venice Architecture Biennale.
The large practices
SSH and U+A carry a great deal of what actually gets built in this city, which is a different skill from the one that wins biennales and is no less difficult. SSH took best leisure architecture in Dubai for 2025 and 2026 with J1 Beach.
Foster and Partners, Aedas and the other international offices with studios here belong on any honest list, because a significant share of the skyline is theirs. The interesting question with all of them is how much of the work is drawn in Dubai and how much arrives finished.
What a list like this is actually for
If you are a client, it is a starting point and nothing more. Go and stand in a building by anyone you are considering before you write to them.
If you are an architect, you probably arrived here checking whether you are on it, which is the honest reason most people read these.
