A list of Saudi practices reads differently from a list of Dubai ones, because the Kingdom has two architectural generations in the room at the same time. There are the large consultancies that drew most of modern Saudi Arabia and have been doing it for fifty years, and there are small studios, mostly founded in the last decade, asking what Saudi architecture should look like when it is not borrowing.
As with the Dubai list, this is not a ranking and it will be wrong in places. If your practice belongs here and is not, write and tell us.
The houses that built modern Saudi Arabia
Saudconsult was founded in 1965 by Tarek al-Shawaf and is among the oldest and largest engineering and architectural firms in the Kingdom. Very little of the country was drawn without a practice like it somewhere in the chain.
Omrania, founded in 1973 and based in Riyadh, worked on the Kingdom Centre, completed in 2002 and still the tallest building in the country. Saudi Diyar Consultants, founded in 1981, belongs in the same bracket.
These practices are rarely discussed the way a boutique studio is, which is a mistake. Understanding how they deliver at that scale, in that climate, under that procurement, is more useful to a working architect than another competition render.
The studios asking the harder question
Bricklab, based in Jeddah, is the practice most often cited when people talk about a contemporary Saudi architecture with its own argument rather than an imported one. Their work with rammed earth, including pieces made for a United Nations exhibition on Diriyah in Paris, sits exactly where the interesting conversation is.
INJ Architects, founded by Ibrahim Nawaf Joharji, has built quickly across residential and commercial work and is among the more visible of the newer Saudi names.
Diriyah is the project to watch
Whatever else is being built, Diriyah is the one that will be studied. Mud brick construction has been revived there at a scale nobody has attempted in modern times, which makes it a genuine test of whether a traditional system can carry contemporary programme, servicing and fire strategy. X Architects is among the practices working inside the historic district.
Every major international office now has a Riyadh presence, and the work is real. The question worth asking of any of them is the same one worth asking in Dubai: how much is drawn here, and how much arrives finished.
Why this matters more here
A market moving this fast has no institutional memory yet. Whatever your practice is learning on site this month, someone else is about to learn it the hard way, and there is very little that is small, regular and in person where that knowledge can move between practices.
